In real estate, success isn't just about making sales; it’s about navigating the ups and downs, learning from every experience, and constantly evolving to meet new challenges.

This week on the REalizations Podcast, I spoke with Syed Mohsin. He is an entrepreneur and a top-producing real estate agent. He is also the founder of Boss Agents Academy.

Syed’s story is a testament to how perseverance, adaptability, and a commitment to learning can turn setbacks into opportunities and transform a career.

Let me guide you through the key points from our conversation, exploring Syed's journey from his early challenges to his rise as a successful real estate agent.

Syed Mohsin’s Background: From Bangladesh to Real Estate

Syed’s path into real estate wasn’t a typical one. Born and raised in Bangladesh, he moved to the United States 18 years ago. During his first year at Pershing High School, Syed was one of the few students of his ethnicity, facing an unexpected environment.

After high school, Syed went to Wayne State University to study engineering. However, he changed his mind about his career. This change was due to the decline of the auto industry and his professors losing their jobs. It was a pivotal moment that led him to reevaluate his future.

While working as a restaurant server to pay for school, Syed started exploring other ways to make money. One day, his father handed him a copy of Rich Dad Poor Dad, and it changed his perspective. After reading the book, Syed made the bold decision to drop out of school and dive into business full-time.

This led him to e-commerce, where he started buying and selling phones and laptops on platforms like Craigslist and eBay. This entrepreneurial leap eventually steered him toward real estate, where he found his true calling.

Financial Struggles and Overcoming Obstacles

Syed’s journey was not without financial challenges, but e-commerce gave him the financial freedom to take risks and explore new opportunities.

His breakthrough in real estate came when he purchased his first property at a foreclosure auction in Detroit for $12,000. After making some basic improvements, he sold the property for $25,000 the next day.

That was when Syed realized that real estate was a faster and more lucrative way to make money compared to his previous ventures. Despite facing numerous challenges along the way, Syed never let financial setbacks stop him. His story is a great reminder that persistence and hard work can turn even the toughest situations into success.

Hiring a Coach and Gaining Success

In 2015, Syed made another pivotal decision that would dramatically change his career—he hired a coach. He joined the Tom Ferry Organization and learned how to refine his sales skills and convert leads more effectively. This move accelerated his growth, allowing him to transition from struggling agent to top producer.

In his first year with a coach, Syed sold 35 homes. The following year, that number jumped to 57, and then to 65 in the year after that. Syed’s experience proves that investing in a coach can make all the difference, especially when you're feeling stuck or uncertain about the next steps. I couldn’t agree more—working with a mentor or coach not only helps you refine your skills but also gives you the confidence and guidance needed to break through to the next level.

Listening to real estate podcasts was another step that contributed to Syed’s success. These resources provided him with fresh ideas and strategies, helping him stay sharp and informed on industry trends. For anyone looking to grow in real estate, podcasts are an excellent way to continue learning and stay ahead of the curve.

Challenges with Paid Leads

Like many agents, Syed initially relied heavily on paid leads from platforms like Zillow and Realtor.com. However, as his business grew, he realized that these leads were becoming increasingly expensive and less effective. At one point, he was spending $90,000 a year on leads, but his return on investment was minimal.

Syed recognized that the quality of leads was dropping and that the cost was unsustainable. This prompted him to make a significant shift: he stopped paying for leads altogether. Instead, Syed focused on building relationships within his sphere of influence and leveraging his brand.

He also realized the importance of having a mortgage broker in his network to offer his clients a more seamless experience when buying homes. This partnership helped him provide added value to his clients, making the process easier and more efficient.

Developing a Marketing System and Transitioning to Coaching

Syed’s transition away from paid leads and into a more sustainable marketing strategy was key to his success. He developed a system he calls the Magnetic Brand Funnel System, which allowed him to generate leads without relying on costly ads. By focusing on personal branding, Syed was able to create a marketing system that consistently brought in high-quality leads, enabling him to sell over 1,000 homes over 12 years.

This system was a game-changer for Syed, not only for his own business but also for the agents he would later coach. With the success of his marketing system, Syed was ready to transition from being an agent to becoming a coach. He founded Boss Agents Academy, where he trains agents on how to build their businesses using the same principles that worked for him.

Building a National Team and Real Estate Academy

As Syed’s business continued to flourish, he decided to expand and create a national team. In 2020, during the height of the pandemic, he sold 90 homes, marking his best year in real estate. This success led to the creation of Boss Agents Academy, where Syed coaches and mentors agents across the country.

At Boss Agents Academy, Syed teaches agents how to develop their own magnetic brand system, emphasizing sustainable business practices and personal growth. Today, Syed’s academy has over 500 agents, and he continues to lead a micro team of five highly motivated agents, proving that a smaller, focused team can achieve incredible success.

Challenges and Success in Team Building

Building a high-performing team isn’t easy, and Syed admits that he struggled with recruitment and team management at first. However, after refining his approach and focusing on the right people, Syed found success. He now understands that building a strong team isn’t about the number of agents—it’s about finding the right people who share your vision and commitment.

“I realized I didn’t need to recruit every agent under the sun,” Syed said. “I needed to focus on the ones who were committed and motivated to grow.”

By focusing on quality, Syed was able to scale his business without the stress of constantly recruiting or managing a large team.
