Being a real estate agent isn’t easy. It’s a career filled with constant challenges, shifting markets, and high-pressure negotiations. But behind every successful agent, there’s often a great manager—a leader who offers guidance, problem-solving skills, and emotional support.

That’s exactly why I wanted to sit down with my own manager, Tracy McBride, on my podcast. Tracy is the sales manager for Compass in Berkeley, and she plays an essential role in keeping our office running smoothly while helping agents like me grow our businesses.

In this post, I’ll share some of Tracy’s incredible insights on what it takes to be a great real estate manager, the challenges she faces, and why strong leadership is crucial in this industry.

Tracy McBride’s Background and Role

Tracy’s journey in real estate started as an agent. Like many of us, she spent years working directly with buyers and sellers, handling the highs and lows of transactions. Over time, she transitioned into a leadership role and became the sales manager for Compass in Berkeley.

While she expected the job to be demanding, she admits it’s been even harder than she imagined. Managing an office full of agents requires constant attention, strategic thinking, and the ability to juggle multiple responsibilities.

But at the core of it all, she says, is trust. A great manager earns the trust of their agents and works with them to solve problems and navigate challenges together.

What It Takes to Be a Great Real Estate Manager: Insights from Tracy

Real estate management is more than just overseeing transactions and office logistics. Tracy offers an inside look at what makes a great real estate manager and how her role goes beyond the numbers to truly shape agent success.

The Role of a Sales Manager in Real Estate

Unlike agents, who primarily focus on clients and transactions, sales managers work behind the scenes to support and elevate their teams. Tracy describes her role as “multifaceted,” with responsibilities that include:

  • Coordinating with regional and national Compass leadership to ensure the office operates smoothly.

  • Facilitating best practices and compliance to keep agents on track and prevent costly mistakes.

  • Organizing training, meetings, and networking events to keep agents informed and motivated.

  • Providing emotional and professional support to agents as they navigate the ups and downs of the business.

  • Balancing financial responsibilities while still making sure agents have the resources they need to succeed.

A great manager doesn’t just set rules—they provide guidance, structure, and motivation, ensuring that every agent has the tools to thrive.

Overcoming Challenges of Managing a Real Estate Office

Managing a real estate office is about making tough decisions every day. Tracy shared some of the biggest challenges she faces, including:

  • Prioritizing urgent tasks versus long-term planning - There’s always a new challenge, but she has to keep an eye on the big picture, too.

  • Keeping all agents engaged with best practices - Not every agent listens to the advice and guidance given to them, which sometimes leads to problems later on.

  • Handling personnel decisions - Letting go of underperforming staff is never easy, but it’s sometimes necessary to keep the office functioning at its best.

Emotional and Mental Aspects of the Job

Being a real estate agent is emotionally intense. Clients rely on us for one of the biggest financial decisions of their lives, and emotions can run high. As agents, we’re involved in every step of the process—from helping clients find mortgage brokers to guiding them through the final stages of closing.

Managers, like Tracy, carry the emotional weight of their agents, helping us handle client challenges, transaction hiccups, and the general stress of the business. This requires an incredible amount of emotional intelligence.

A great manager doesn’t just solve logistical problems but helps agents manage stress, setbacks, and uncertainty.

Finding Work-Life Balance

If there’s one thing real estate professionals struggle with, it’s turning off work mode. Tracy admits that even though she’s in a leadership role, she still finds it hard to step away from real estate completely.

To maintain some balance, she makes time for gardening and personal activities. It helps her reset and recharge. I completely relate—I recently tried to read a book unrelated to real estate or my PhD program, and it was surprisingly difficult!

For agents and managers alike, setting boundaries and carving out personal time is essential for long-term success in this industry.

The Importance of a Strong Manager-Agent Relationship

As an agent, I truly believe that a good manager is the most important person in your professional life. Clients come and go, but your office environment and leadership shape your entire career.

Tracy has helped foster an office culture based on collaboration and community, rather than just numbers and stats. That’s a huge shift.

When I first joined Compass, our focus was heavily on market data and trends. Now, Tracy has helped us return to what matters most, which is our relationships, our expertise, and our ability to serve our clients with integrity.

This is one of the reasons why I started real estate podcasting as well. It’s not just about business but about sharing knowledge and creating a supportive community where agents and clients alike can learn and grow.

The Future of Real Estate

The real estate industry is constantly evolving. Market shifts, changing regulations, and new technologies keep us all on our toes.

Tracy believes that adapting to change is the key to success. Whether it’s adjusting to new industry rules or leveraging technology, like artificial intelligence (AI), real estate professionals must keep learning and growing.

One thing that will never change, though, is the importance of strong client relationships. No matter how much AI advances, real estate is still a people-first business.

Clients need guidance, strategy, and human insight—things that no algorithm can replace!
