In real estate, the pressure to always be “on” can lead us to believe that nonstop work is the only path to success. But what if we've been approaching it all wrong? What if the real goal isn’t just more deals, but more freedom?
That’s the question at the heart of my recent REalizations Podcast episode with Mitch Ribak. He is a real estate leader, coach, and author with decades of experience. Mitch has a powerful message that challenges how we define success.
Mitch has worn every hat in the industry: agent, broker-owner, team leader, entrepreneur, and author. But his most important role now? Helping others find freedom in their work—before it's too late.
The Wake-Up Call: Time Is the Real Currency
Mitch began by sharing a moment of truth. At age 60, after owning 27 companies and logging decades of 80- to 100-hour workweeks, he took a hard look back. What he saw wasn’t just financial wins and business ventures—it was time he could never get back with his kids.
Despite all the success, he couldn’t name five specific memories he had with them growing up.
This realization shaped his new mission: helping others avoid that same regret. In a profession where we often say we’re “doing it for our families,” Mitch challenges us to ask: Are we really?
Breaking the Big Lie
That question led him to write The Big Lie, a book that unpacks the myth many entrepreneurs and Realtors live by—that more work means more worth. Mitch explained how most real estate professionals don’t own a business; they own what he calls a “crappy job.”
If you can’t walk away from your business without it falling apart, you don’t own a system—you are the system. What’s worse? We often tell ourselves we’re doing it all for our families. In reality, it’s usually ego and fear driving the bus.
Creating Freedom Through Structure
After reading "Die With Zero" in 2021, Mitch took immediate action to improve his work-life balance by reducing his hours from 60 to 30 per week. This overnight decision necessitated strategic hiring and the implementation of more efficient systems, resulting in a redefined sense of productivity and a more balanced, rewarding professional life.
Establishing Boundaries and Prioritizing Tasks
Mitch established boundaries to safeguard his personal time and mental health by blocking off personal time in his schedule and refusing work calls after 6 p.m. This decision helped him maintain a healthy work-life balance. He focused on high-impact tasks such as negotiation, strategy, and leadership, maximizing his effectiveness in fewer working hours.
Delegation and Team Empowerment
Recognizing the importance of delegation, Mitch assigned various responsibilities to his team, including client showings and routine tasks. This empowerment reduced his workload and promoted ownership and accountability among employees, allowing him to concentrate on strategic business aspects.
Achieving More with Less
Mitch exemplifies the principle of working smarter, not harder, achieving tasks in 30 hours that once took 60. His strategic restructuring highlights the effectiveness of efficient systems, demonstrating that with the right foundation, it's possible to work less and achieve more. His journey showcases how structured changes can enhance freedom and productivity.
Whether it’s automating processes, outsourcing tasks, or aligning with a trusted mortgage broker to streamline client experiences, every piece matters.
Coaching Agents to Reclaim Their Lives
Now, Mitch devotes most of his energy to coaching. He helps Realtors and entrepreneurs build freedom-based models—ones that prioritize life, not just income.
He shared the story of an agent in Orlando who was working 60 hours per week. After adopting Mitch’s time-tracking and leverage strategies, she reduced her hours to 50 and continues to cut them, all while maintaining her strong production.
Some of Mitch’s core strategies include:
-
Tracking every minute of your workweek to reveal wasted time
-
Saying “no” to tasks that don’t align with your core goals
-
Time blocking for deep focus and meaningful rest
-
Outsourcing low-value activities to regain your schedule
Many of his coaching students also benefit from insights they gain from listening to real estate podcasts—resources that, when combined with strategic mentorship, can transform the way agents operate.
Rethinking the Buyer-Agent Model
One of the most compelling parts of our conversation was how Mitch reengineered the buyer side of his business. Traditionally, agents split commissions 50/50 with buyer’s agents. However, Mitch pays his buyer partners hourly, typically $25 to $75, depending on the market, and offers 10% of the commission if they assist in writing the offer.
The result? He retains the majority of the income while drastically reducing his time commitment. The key is transparency. When explaining the model to clients, he clearly communicates that his strength lies in negotiation and deal structuring, not opening doors.
This simple shift allows him to maintain control, ensure quality, and protect his time.
Saying “No” Is a Skill—Not a Flaw
One of the most powerful tools Mitch and I discussed is the ability to say “no.” In a culture where Realtors are taught to take every deal, every call, every opportunity, learning to be selective is radical—and necessary.
During the pandemic, I had a similar realization. I scaled back, prioritized my health, and focused on quality over quantity. My production didn’t suffer. In fact, it improved.
Mitch’s story reaffirmed what I learned: saying no isn’t about laziness. It’s about clarity.

My conversation with Mitch Ribak left a lasting impression. His message is clear: we don’t have to sacrifice our lives to succeed in real estate. In fact, if we’re constantly chasing more without boundaries, we risk losing the very things we’re working for.
Success isn’t just about how many homes we sell or how fast we grow. It’s about whether we can step away, breathe, and still have a business that thrives. Mitch has shown that it’s possible to earn more, work less, and be fully present for our clients, our families, and ourselves.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, overworked, or unsure how to take that next step toward balance, you’re not alone. And you don’t have to figure it out alone either.
