In real estate, our roles as realtors extend far beyond closing deals. This industry allows us to connect with people, build trust, and leave a lasting impact on communities. In a way, we’re at the heart of our own communities, fostering strong and supportive environments.

I had the pleasure of hosting Michael Gross, a high-performing realtor from Sioux Falls, South Dakota on a recent episode of my podcast. Michael embodies the spirit of service and volunteerism, and he’s more than a successful realtor—he’s a community hero, always working to make a difference.

In this post, I’ll walk you through the inspiring takeaways from our conversation, showing how Michael’s journey and dedication highlight the positive influence realtors can have on their communities.

Michael’s Background and Path to Real Estate

Michael’s journey to real estate is unique.

Before he became a top agent, he worked multiple jobs in South Dakota, saving every penny to buy his first home. It wasn’t an easy road—he faced significant personal challenges, including a period of homelessness and financial hardship.

However, these experiences only fueled his drive to succeed. When he finally purchased his first home, it was an incredibly fulfilling experience, and he knew he wanted to help others achieve the same.

Michael’s first encounter with a real estate agent was disappointing. The agent was dismissive and condescending, which left him feeling unvalued as a client. That experience stayed with him, and when he eventually entered real estate, he was determined to offer clients a supportive and positive experience.

His story reminded me of why so many of us choose this profession. Real estate isn’t just a job. It’s a way to make a difference in people’s lives!

Building Community Through Service: Michael’s Heart of Giving

Michael is deeply involved in supporting his community, and his efforts impact countless lives. Let’s dive into the incredible ways he has given back to Sioux Falls.

Leadership and Support for the Homeless Through St. Francis House

Michael serves as the president of St. Francis House, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping homeless individuals transition into stable living situations. It provides shelter and offers a structured program where residents can rebuild their lives step by step. Residents are encouraged to find employment, settle their debts, and work towards financial independence.

Michael’s role as president allows him to directly influence the lives of those who need a fresh start. He believes that everyone deserves a chance, and his dedication to St. Francis House is a testament to his commitment to uplifting others.

Volunteer Firefighter and Community Involvement

Michael is also a volunteer firefighter, which speaks volumes about his character and dedication. Being such requires selflessness and a willingness to jump into action whenever needed.

Apart from being a firefighter, Michael also participates in various community organizations, using his time and skills to support different causes around Sioux Falls.

These involvements are a reminder that, as realtors, our responsibility to our communities can extend beyond our professional lives.

Engaging the Community Through Events and Local Business Support

One of Michael’s favorite ways to bring people together is through community events.

He recently organized an event called “The Amazing Race,” where teams will compete in fun, interactive challenges to see the sights of Brandon. Events like these foster a strong sense of community, giving locals a chance to connect while promoting small businesses. This type of event is especially powerful in a small town, where people value relationships and support one another.

Hosting a podcast, like my REalizations Podcast, feels similar. Both are platforms for building connections, sharing insights, and supporting those around us. Producing this podcast has been a rewarding journey, especially with the help of a professional real estate podcast production company that has guided me through the process.

Like Michael’s events, it’s a way for me to connect with and support my community, both near and far.

Real Estate with a Purpose: Building Trust and Creating Positive Experiences

Michael strives to make every interaction a positive one, from the first home tour to handing over the keys.

His approach stands in contrast to negative industry stereotypes and demonstrates his commitment to clients. Michael emphasizes the importance of treating clients with respect and empathy, always listening to their needs, and offering personalized services, such as helping them find trustworthy mortgage brokers or crafting the best offers.

For Michael, real estate is about building trust and creating an experience that leaves clients feeling valued.

Comparing Real Estate Practices Across Regions

Talking with Michael reminded me of how real estate varies across regions.

According to Michael, Sioux Falls has a close-knit, neighborly culture, where people trust one another and often rely on a handshake as a symbol of their word. He shared that contracts in his area are typically much shorter than the ones I work with here in California, where regulations and processes are highly detailed. For Michael and his clients, this simplicity reflects the trust and straightforwardness of small-town life.

In larger urban areas like the Bay Area, the real estate process is different. California has extensive contracts and strict regulations, creating a more formal, sometimes complex, experience for clients.

Despite these differences, it’s clear that realtors everywhere are working toward the same goal: supporting their clients and communities in the best way possible.
